Ragy Thomas, founder of Sprinklr, along with two Lowe’s AI executives, argue in their new book “The Enterprise Brain” that AI failure is an org-design problem, not a technology problem. Published June 30 by Fast Company Press at $29.99, the book introduces a framework for connecting people, processes, data, and AI into a system capable of scaling intelligence across the enterprise. The central claim is that the knowledge worker’s role is shifting from doing work to governing the systems that do it, a change the authors call the Governor Shift.

What this means for your business

The companies most exposed to this argument are the ones currently measuring AI success by adoption rates and tool deployment counts. If your AI program is organized around licensing seats and training headcounts rather than around how decisions get made and where knowledge actually flows, the book’s diagnosis probably fits. The Governor Shift framing is the useful provocation here: it reframes the workforce question from “who is displaced” to “who is qualified to design and oversee the systems doing the displacing,” which is a harder and more urgent problem.

The argument holds more than it’s being given credit for in the current AI discourse. Most enterprise AI initiatives stall not because the models underperform but because the organizational plumbing, decision rights, data ownership, escalation paths, was never redesigned to accommodate machine-generated outputs. Dropping a capable AI into an org designed around human-paced, siloed decision-making produces a capable AI that nobody trusts or acts on. That failure mode is well-documented and the book correctly identifies it as architectural, not technical. Worth noting that Thomas is building UnifyApps, a platform explicitly positioned as the infrastructure for this “Enterprise Brain,” which gives the framework a commercial shape that benefits from feeling indispensable rather than modular.

The sharpest question this raises isn’t whether the framework is right but whether your organization has anyone with a clear mandate to own it. Most large enterprises have a CISO for security architecture, a CDO for data architecture, and a CTO for technical architecture, but nobody explicitly owns decision architecture, the design of how and where the company reaches conclusions. That gap is exactly where AI initiatives go to die. If you’d revise this view, show me an enterprise that scaled AI impact without first answering who owns the governance layer, and I’ll revisit the premise.
