Akamai is betting that enterprise AI adoption has created a security gap that existing tools weren’t designed to close, and it’s positioning its newly rebranded Akamai Workforce Protector as the answer. The product, formerly LayerX (acquired for roughly $205 million in July 2026), sits inside existing browsers and applications to govern AI tool usage, prevent sensitive data from reaching unauthorized models, and extend visibility to desktop AI apps, all without requiring users to change browsers or organizations to redesign their networks.
