Cequence Security is planting a flag in Japan, using its NTT DOCOMO deployment as a beachhead to expand sales and support capacity in the market. The platform covers application, API, and agentic AI protection across web, mobile, and AI channels. Alongside the DOCOMO announcement, Cequence is launching its AI Gateway product in Japan, targeting the authentication, authorization, and behavioral monitoring of AI agents that access enterprise APIs and MCP servers. The company claims to protect more than 10 billion daily API interactions globally.
What this means for your business
The NTT DOCOMO win matters less as a customer story and more as a signal about where enterprise API security spending is heading. DOCOMO runs infrastructure at a scale that punishes vendors quickly, so surviving that deployment is a meaningful proof point. The CISO who should pay attention is one whose organization is actively deploying AI agents, because those agents route through APIs, and most existing web application firewalls were never designed to inspect, authenticate, or throttle non-human agent traffic at scale.
The AI Gateway product is where Cequence is making its real architectural bet. AI agents, unlike human users, don’t log in once and browse. They call APIs continuously, chain tool calls across systems, and can be granted privileges that persist well beyond the task that justified them. The security control pattern Cequence is describing, least-privilege access for agents, real-time behavioral guardrails, and MCP server governance, is the right framing. The question is whether bolting an AI governance layer onto an existing API security platform produces genuinely integrated protection or just two products sharing a dashboard.
The vendor to watch here isn’t Cequence alone. Competitors including Noname, Salt Security, and Apigee-backed incumbents are all circling the same agentic AI security gap. Cequence’s advantage, if it holds, is a decade of behavioral detection data covering bot and abuse patterns that map cleanly onto how rogue or compromised agents behave. If that detection library actually informs the AI Gateway’s behavioral models rather than sitting in a separate product line, the integration story is real. If it doesn’t, an enterprise already running a mature API gateway has less reason to consolidate onto Cequence than the press release implies.
Concept deep-dive: MCP (Model Context Protocol)
MCP is an emerging standard that lets AI agents discover and call external tools and data sources, think of it as a USB protocol for AI, defining how an agent plugs into a service without custom integration work for every connection. Because MCP standardizes the handshake between agent and tool, it also standardizes the attack surface. Any enterprise deploying MCP-connected agents needs governance over which agents can call which tools, and under what conditions, which is exactly the control plane Cequence’s AI Gateway is positioning to provide.
