Most B2B sales organizations are running AI on a broken foundation, and the tools are making it worse, not better. Ken Jisser, writing from his vantage point building a 500-person outbound sales operation, argues that the real AI sales problem is organizational, not technological. Only about 12% of companies have meaningfully integrated AI into sales workflows, per recent research, and Bain finds most still lack the data and process foundations to extract real value. Adoption is climbing; measurable revenue impact is not.
What this means for your business
The companies most exposed here are the ones that bought AI tools to solve a pipeline problem they hadn’t yet diagnosed. If your CRM data is inconsistent, your ideal customer profile is loosely defined, or your stage-to-stage conversion rates are more estimate than measurement, AI doesn’t fill those gaps. It scales them. The question worth asking before the next renewal cycle is whether your AI spend is sitting on top of a working system or papering over one that isn’t.
Jisser’s framing, shaped by running a firm that sells AI-augmented sales development, tilts predictably toward the “fix the system first” message his own service delivers. But the tilt doesn’t break the argument. The pattern he describes, activity metrics rising while revenue outcomes flatline, is well-documented enough to take seriously on its own terms. The stat worth holding onto is that financial operators report companies use less than 30% of the data and technology they’ve already purchased. That’s not an AI problem. That’s a systems integration problem that AI billing is currently hiding.
The sharper second-order effect is what happens to sales headcount decisions downstream. When AI-generated outreach volume rises but meeting-to-opportunity conversion stays flat, leadership reads the dashboard as a capacity problem and presses for more automation, not better targeting. That loop accelerates exactly the deterioration Jisser warns about. The CRO who wants to break it needs pipeline visibility at the conversion level, not the activity level, before the next board review reframes the question as “how much more AI do we need.”
