Bhavin Turakhia is putting $30 million of his own money behind Neo, an enterprise work platform<\/a> built from scratch to combine project management, documents, file storage, and AI in a single product. The serial founder behind Directi and Zeta argues that retrofitting AI onto legacy workplace software produces structurally inferior results, and that only a ground-up rebuild captures what the shift actually requires. Neo launched internally in April, runs on 45 employees today with a target of 100 by year-end, and is aimed at mid-sized firms in technology, consulting, and professional services.<\/p>\n

The vendor you’re already paying for workplace software is almost certainly pitching you an AI layer bolted onto an architecture that predates large language models by a decade or more. Whether that matters depends on what you’re actually trying to do. If your use cases fit what those layers expose, incumbents may be sufficient. If you’re hitting ceilings on how deeply AI can interact with your data and workflows, the ceiling is probably the architecture, not the model.<\/p>\n

The “ground-up redesign” argument has a recurring failure mode worth naming. Greenfield platforms built to escape legacy constraints routinely underestimate how much enterprise value lives inside the integrations, compliance certifications, and IT governance hooks that incumbents spent years accumulating. Neo’s model-agnostic design, where enterprises can swap between AI providers rather than being locked to one, is the most credible differentiator in the pitch. If Neo lands named enterprise customers outside his own portfolio of companies within 18 months, the ground-up thesis has legs worth watching. If the reference customer list stays internal to Zeta and its siblings, Neo is a well-funded internal tool with a press strategy. For CIOs currently evaluating workplace AI consolidation, the more useful signal from this story isn’t Neo specifically. It’s that a credible founder with real enterprise experience looked at every incumbent’s AI roadmap and decided none of them were worth betting on.<\/p>\n
