Anthropic flipped the default posture for autonomous AI coding agents running inside enterprise cloud accounts. Claude Code version 2.1.207<\/a> removes the opt-in flag that previously kept auto mode inactive on Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, and Microsoft Azure Foundry. As of Friday, the agent plans, writes, tests, commits, and opens pull requests autonomously by default. Teams that want manual, per-action approval must now actively set disableAutoMode<\/code> in managed organizational settings before the update propagates across their developer fleet.<\/p>\n

The governance inversion here is the story. Before Friday, inertia protected teams that hadn’t evaluated autonomous agents: the feature was off until someone turned it on. Now inertia exposes them. A compliance team at a financial services firm that hasn’t reviewed Claude Code’s auto mode classifier will wake up to production-connected agents operating autonomously, simply because no one set a flag. Claude Code’s auto mode sits a dedicated second AI model between the coding agent and every action it wants to take. Think of it as a co-pilot watching the pilot’s hands, not their thoughts. It catches scope escalation, suspicious infrastructure targets, and prompt-injection patterns.
