Support peaks among workers earning $150,000 to $199,999, where 54.6% back the idea, then drops sharply above the $200,000 threshold. Geographically, the West Coast (42.5%) and Northeast (37.9%) are most receptive, while the Midwest sits at 18.1%. The full executive replacement survey covers demographic splits in detail.

What this means for your business

The headline number is less interesting than the income band where support peaks. Workers earning $150,000 to $199,999 are most likely to have genuine, hands-on exposure to forecasting models, workflow automation, and performance dashboards without yet having the personal stake in executive continuity that kicks in above $200,000. That’s not anti-leadership sentiment rooted in ignorance. It’s a signal from the people who actually run the models that they think the models could run more of the decisions.

The gender gap is the sharper finding, and Watch Chest’s own explanation points in the right direction. Women’s greater skepticism toward removing human judgment from high-stakes decisions likely reflects a different risk model, one that weights accountability, ethical exposure, and employee well-being more heavily than speed or analytical throughput. CFOs running AI adoption programs inside their own finance functions should treat that split as diagnostic data. If half your organization views AI-led decision-making as a feature and the other half views it as a governance failure waiting to happen, the deployment strategy that ignores that divide will produce the backlash the other half predicted.

The story this survey actually tells has nothing to do with whether AI will replace CFOs, it won’t, at least not in any structurally coherent version of corporate accountability. What it does reveal is a legitimacy gap opening beneath executive leadership, one where proximity to AI tools correlates with willingness to question whether human judgment at the top adds proportional value. CFOs who can’t articulate where their judgment diverges from the model, and why that divergence is worth paying for, are already losing that argument inside their own organizations.

Based on reporting from Could AI replace CFOs and other top executives?, originally published 2026-08-06 08:31:00.

Share with your CFO A survey of 2,180 U.S. adults by luxury watch retailer Watch Chest finds that a meaningful share of Americans think AI should replace C-suite executives, with men leading that sentiment at 45.5% compared to 25.2% of women.
