Boomi is betting that AI agent deployment has outpaced data quality controls, and it’s acquiring its way into that gap. The company purchased Elementary Data, a 2022-founded data observability startup with 1,500 enterprise data teams and 1.1 million monthly downloads, to fold pipeline monitoring, column-level lineage, and automated anomaly detection into its existing integration platform. A Forrester study commissioned by Boomi found that 86% of business leaders have moved past AI agent pilots, but only 34% trust what those agents actually do, and premature deployments have cost organizations an average of $2.1 million each.
What this means for your business
The trust gap those numbers describe is not an AI problem. It’s a data infrastructure problem wearing an AI mask. If your organization is running agents that read from production pipelines, query data warehouses, or trigger downstream actions, the quality and lineage of that data determines whether the agent is an asset or a liability. CDOs who have treated observability as a nice-to-have monitoring layer now face a different calculation: it’s the load-bearing wall underneath agentic automation.
Boomi’s move follows a recognizable consolidation pattern in enterprise software, where integration vendors absorb adjacent point solutions to avoid becoming a commodity pipe. Elementary brings something specific here though, its Model Context Protocol server, which exposes data quality metadata directly to AI tools and agents at inference time rather than just in dashboards. That’s the architectural detail worth watching. Most data quality platforms catch problems after the fact. Elementary’s design surfaces health scores and lineage context to the AI system before it acts, which is a materially different control point and the kind of capability that’s genuinely difficult to replicate through a standard API integration.
Boomi serves 30,000 customers through 800 partners, which means Elementary’s technology gets distribution that a standalone startup could not build in any reasonable timeframe. For vendors competing in this space, including Monte Carlo, Acceldata, and others, that distribution advantage tightens the window for differentiation. For enterprises currently evaluating data observability platforms independently of their integration layer, this acquisition is a reason to revisit whether a best-of-breed observability purchase still makes sense, or whether consolidating onto a platform that governs data in motion and monitors its quality becomes a more defensible architecture when agents are the primary consumer.
Concept deep-dive: Data lineage
Data lineage tracks where a piece of information originated, how it moved through enterprise systems, and what transformations changed it along the way, roughly analogous to a chain of custody record in a legal proceeding. It exists because when an AI agent or analytics system produces a wrong answer, you need to trace the error back to its source. Column-level lineage, which Elementary provides, goes further than table-level tracking, pinning accountability to the specific field an agent read when it made a decision.
