Salesforce is betting that the next CRM battleground is unified context, not just unified data. The company launched Agentforce Coworker in Japan on August 5, making the AI assistant generally available inside the Salesforce platform. The product pulls across CRM records, Slack threads, and more than 270 enterprise data sources through Data 360, answers questions in natural language including Japanese, cites its sources, and can trigger specialized AI agents to take action. Setup reportedly takes two to three minutes.
What this means for your business
The two-to-three-minute setup claim is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, and whether you believe it probably depends on how much of your enterprise data is already inside the Salesforce ecosystem. Companies running their customer data, communications, and workflow inside Salesforce, Slack, and a handful of connected SaaS tools are the obvious first movers. Organizations with CRM data spread across legacy ERP systems, on-premise databases, and homegrown tools will find that 270 connectors is an impressive number until the one connector they need is missing.
The framing Salesforce is using, “agentic CRM,” is more than positioning. It reflects a structural shift in how CRM vendors are competing: the product is no longer the database of customer records but the reasoning layer sitting above it. Microsoft Copilot inside Dynamics and HubSpot’s AI assistant are chasing the same surface area. What Salesforce has that competitors find hard to replicate quickly is the combination of Data Cloud’s breadth and the existing Slack integration, which means the assistant can answer a question about a deal by pulling in both the CRM opportunity record and the Slack thread where the sales rep flagged a risk. That cross-system retrieval is the actual moat, not the agent count.
Japan is a deliberate choice, not a random international rollout. Large Japanese enterprises are known for operating with data siloed across internal groupware, legacy mainframe systems, and communication tools that predate cloud adoption, which means the cross-source search value proposition is genuinely higher there than in a greenfield cloud-native market. If Agentforce Coworker earns its keep in that environment, the enterprise sales motion becomes considerably easier everywhere else. I’d revise this read if it turns out the Japan launch is mostly hitting mid-market accounts already running Salesforce in a relatively clean cloud stack rather than the complex multi-system environments the launch narrative implies.
