Apple is betting that privacy-first AI integration across its device ecosystem is a more defensible position than raw model capability, and WWDC 2025 was the formal declaration of that strategy. With Tim Cook’s final keynote before John Ternus takes the CEO role in September, Apple unveiled a revamped Siri and broader Apple Intelligence features designed to close the gap with ChatGPT and Gemini, framed not as matching them but as being categorically different from them.
What this means for your business
If your organization has Apple devices in the hands of knowledge workers, and most do, the relevant question isn’t whether Apple has caught OpenAI on benchmark scores. It’s whether on-device AI processing, where computation happens locally rather than being sent to a remote server, changes your data governance calculus enough to shift how aggressively you block or enable AI features in your MDM policies. The CIOs who’ve been playing defense on AI feature access now have a vendor argument they can actually evaluate on security grounds, not just capability ones.
Apple’s privacy framing is strategically sharp but carries a real trap. Privacy-first AI is a genuine architectural differentiator only if the features are good enough that employees don’t route around them. The recurring failure mode here is that IT locks down cloud AI tools on corporate devices, users pull out personal phones or open browser tabs, and the shadow AI problem gets worse, not better. Apple’s bet only pays off if the on-device experience is compelling enough to contain that behavior, and two years of stumbling on promised AI features is not a confidence-building track record.
Ternus inherits a company where the next two years of AI execution will either validate the privacy moat or expose it as a consolation narrative for falling behind. The leading indicator to watch isn’t Siri’s new demo reel; it’s enterprise MDM vendor updates from Jamf and Microsoft Intune reflecting whether IT administrators are loosening Apple Intelligence restrictions rather than tightening them. If those controls stay locked down by default six months after Ternus takes over, the privacy story didn’t land where it needed to.
