Amazon is pulling back from most of its Nova model lineup, including the Premier, Omni, Reel video-generation, and Canvas image-generation models, to concentrate resources on a new frontier-model program led by researcher Pieter Abbeel. The strategic reset follows layoffs in Amazon’s AGI group and a consolidation of that work under cloud veteran Peter DeSantis. A flagship frontier model is expected at re:Invent later this year. Nova 2 Lite, Nova 2 Sonic, and the Nova Forge model-customization service remain active.

What this means for your business

If your team has built anything on Nova Premier, Nova Omni, or the generative media models, the deprecation clock is running whether Amazon has published an end-of-life date or not. The companies most exposed aren’t the ones who chose Amazon over OpenAI on price. They’re the ones who chose it on the assumption that a hyperscaler would never quietly sunset a flagship product inside eighteen months of launch. That assumption is now falsified.

Amazon’s problem with Nova was never technical, it was narrative. OpenAI and Anthropic own mind-share with developers, and Google has the distribution. Amazon tried to compete on model quality without the research credibility to make the benchmark scores feel meaningful. The pivot to Abbeel-led frontier research is an attempt to buy that credibility, but frontier model development is a two-to-three year bet minimum, and Amazon is starting this lap behind. The honest read on the re:Invent debut timeline is that it’s a holding announcement, not a product release.

The vendor-lock risk here is worth reframing. AWS infrastructure, Bedrock’s model-routing layer (the managed service that lets enterprises call multiple AI models through a single API), and the Nova Forge customization service are all continuing. Amazon isn’t exiting the enterprise AI market. It’s admitting that its differentiation will come from infrastructure and orchestration, not from owning the best foundation model. For a CTO deciding how much proprietary Nova fine-tuning to invest in versus staying model-agnostic on Bedrock, that admission should shift the calculus toward abstraction. I’d revise this view if the re:Invent model demonstrates benchmark results that materially challenge GPT-5 or Gemini Ultra, but nothing in Amazon’s recent trajectory makes that likely.
